RCMP units flooded a neighbourhood in Campbell River in the early morning hours Sunday after multiple reports of shots fired.
A standoff ensued for several hours as front-line RCMP, police in tactical gear, canine units and an armoured vehicle surrounded a home in an area around Dogwood Street and Alpine Avenue.
Six people were eventually arrested, police said.
The Island District Emergency Response Team, canine units, a crisis negotiation team and Campbell River Major Crimes all responded to the location, RCMP said.
Police told residents to stay indoors.
“The Campbell River RCMP would like to thank the public for staying out of the area, as had been requested by police,” Sgt. Chris Voller said in a statement.
The incident saw several social media posts about the police buildup, which Voller said puts officers and the public at risk.
I want to remind people to refrain from posting photographs and videos of police incidents while they are unfolding,
Voller said. Posting and sharing such images place both the police and civilians at greater risk, as often the people that police are interacting with, may make use of these images or alter their behaviours, resulting in greater risk to all involved.
No injuries were reported, police said.
