Alberta police watchdog investigating man's death after officer injured

EDMONTON — Police say a driver who hit and injured an officer with a stolen vehicle on a major freeway through Edmonton shot and killed himself.

Officers were assisting with traffic control for the transport of an oversized load on Whitemud Drive around 1:20 a.m. when a vehicle drove through the area.

They say the vehicle struck a police officer who was on foot, then fled the scene.

Police say they pursued the vehicle, it stopped, and a man got out and shot himself.

The man was taken to hospital, where he died.

The officer who was hit by the vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries and a woman in the stolen vehicle was not injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the man's death.
