EDMONTON — Alberta has declared Monday will be a provincial day of mourning to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth, but it won't be a statutory holiday.
Instead, the public is invited to take part in an outdoor ceremony at the Alberta legislature on the day of her funeral that will begin with a moment of silence.
Workplaces, schools, offices and retail stores are also encouraged to follow suit.
Saskatchewan has already announced similar plans, calling it a day of tribute without designating an actual holiday.
The Manitoba government says it is closing non-essential government offices and services to mark the occasion, but provincially regulated businesses, schools and other facilities will also remain open.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this week that Monday will be a federal holiday giving federal workers the day off to take part in commemorative events across the country.
"Albertans, Canadians and the peoples of the Commonwealth will join together on this day in sorrow to mourn the death of her late majesty and to commemorate her long and faithful service," said Premier Jason Kenney in a statement.
"I strongly encourage employers and schools to appropriately mark this sombre and historic occasion."
Meanwhile, the Northwest Territories government said "all government offices and service locations will be open for business as usual" on Monday.
