More than 150 years of farming in Athabasca County will be recognized on Nov. 12 at the Agriplex.
Hosted by the Athabasca District Agriculture Society, three farmers who have each spent more than 50 years on the land will have an entire night honouring their commitment to the area.
The evening starts at 6 p.m and will feature awards given to Ronald Kwasney, Victor Polak and Alex Duma. Throughout the evening, the farmers will each give a speech about their half-century here and how they got started in the Athabasca area.
Secretary and event organizer for the agriculture society, Lesia Rys-Popovich, explained that the group has hosted similar events annually for the past decade.
“This is an entire evening dedicated to them,” she said. “We recognize them because this is our business.”
She indicated that Athabasca-Redwater member of the legislative assembly of Alberta (MLA) Jeff Johnson planned to attend the event to congratulate the recipients, as well as a representative from Athabasca County.
She added that the night will also feature some live entertainment in the form of a stand up comedian who will prod the crowd into laughter.
Supper will also be served at the event, with adult tickets going for $25 and students aged 6-17 can get in for $15. Youth under six are free of charge. Tickets are available at the Value Drug Mart in downtown Athabasca.
