Alleged LTIS vandal makes first court appearance

The youth alleged to have caused over $25,000 in damage to Landing Trail Intermediate School had his first appearance in court on Monday, August 22.

The youth alleged to have caused over $25,000 in damage to Landing Trail Intermediate School had his first appearance in court on Monday, August 22.

Police apprehended the 17-year-old suspect on July 20, when he was alleged to have broken numerous windows, discharged fire extinguishers and spread paint on walls and floors. Police said he also caused damage to a bobcat parked outside.

He was charged with break and enter, and mischief over $5,000.

Given the extent of the damage to the school, the Crown attorney told Judge V.H. Myers that they would be seeking “significant restitution” from the accused. The Crown also chose to pursue the case as an indictable offence, which, if found guilty, carries heavier sentences.

The youth, who cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, will seek a lawyer and return to court on September 26.
