Athabasca’s new mayor, Roger Morrill, and the rest of the council, including its two newest members, Richard and Tim Verhaeghe, were sworn in at the organizational meeting last Thursday evening.

Apart from the swearing in of the newest town council, appointments for deputy mayor, the mayor’s address and comments from council were made at the short meeting.

“I would like to congratulate everyone sitting around this table. I’m approaching this term with a lot of optimism,” exclaimed Morrill in his address.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with this team,” added Doug Topinka, chief administrative officer (CAO) for the town.

With a new and fresh start for this term, long-time councillor George Hawryluk said he felt that is as good a time as any to do just that.

“I’d like to welcome everyone back,” he said. “There ‘s a whole bunch of people with different educational and personal backgrounds here, so my personal wish is to try and leave our personal, religious and political views out of these chambers and take care of business here in Athabasca.”
