ATHABASCA – Like a rock star returning to the stage after a long break from touring, the Aspen View Battle of the Bands is set to make a glorious comeback after a COVID-related hiatus tomorrow, May 18.
This showcase of musical talent from Athabasca and other area schools is slated to be hosted at Edwin Parr Composite School from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Teacher/organizer John Traynor said the Battle of the Bands will feature a variety of soloists and groups, including two bands from Thorhild Central School.
A band made of teachers will also take the stage provided there is enough time; Traynor noted the name of the band, “If There’s Time,” is actually a reference to their nature as a back-up.
The entry fee is a donation of a canned item for the food bank, and every participant gets entered into a draw for a door prize.
Plus, the actual winner of the competition gets to perform at the Magnificent River Rats Festival during a special time slot July 1.
Prior to the pandemic, Traynor said they would get entries from all over Aspen View, including some younger kids from Landing Trail Intermediate School (LTIS).
However, the real purpose of the event is to give a spotlight to a group of kids who wouldn’t normally get showcased a lot, said Traynor, noting that this event is effectively the accumulation of open mic sessions he hosts on Fridays at Edwin Parr.
“To see those kids have the courage and strength enough to get up there and perform … it’s always amazed me,” he said.
While students are obviously the primary audience, Traynor indicated parents are welcome to attend if they bring a donation for the food bank.
