BOYLE - A young man from Boyle was recognized for his commitment to his education alongside 11 other students across the province in an April 15 ceremony.
Don Cardinal, a Grade 12 student at Boyle School, was presented with the Honouring Spirit award by Elders Theresa Strawberry and Charlie Fox in Edmonton last week, after being nominated for the award by his school's Indigenous education lead.
“Don has faced challenges that would have made others give up, yet he continues to push forward with incredible strength and determination,” wrote Cary Marshall in her nomination letter.
“I have had the privilege of watching him grow into a strong, resilient and inspiring young man for the last 10years, who not only works hard to achieve his own goals but also uplifts those around him.”
Cardinal was joined by 11 other students from across the province at the Edmonton ceremony, where they each received an award certificate and congratulatory letter, a unique hand-crafted Star Blanket, and a $2,500 scholarship, which he’ll be using at Lakeland College, where he plans to pursue welding.
“It is a privilege to recognize these 12 outstanding Indigenous students from across Alberta,” said Alberta School Board Association president Marilyn Denis.
“Each of these young leaders exemplifies strength and resilience in their educational journeys while embracing the rich traditions and teachings of their cultures.”
Marshall cited Cardinal’s work ethic, leadership, and ambassadorship for his culture as strong reasons he should receive the award.
“I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award,” she wrote.
“Cardinal is not just a student who works hard — he is a young leader, a cultural ambassador, and a person who will no doubt continue to inspire others for years to come. It has been an honour to watch him grow, and I have no doubt he will continue to make his family, his community, and his ancestors proud.”
In addition to the traits Marshall described, Cardinal was recognized for his work in his community. From his work planning Indigenous celebrations for graduation to volunteering at the local food bank, Cardinal was honoured for his contributions.
Over 300 students were nominated for the award from across the province, including multiple students from within Aspen View. Cardinal was joined at the ceremony by Grade 9 student Jaera Anderson, who was nominated by Northern Lights Public Schools.
