Christine Nelson tendered her resignation from Athabasca Town Council on Nov. 9, as she will be relocating to Edmonton.

It was announced at last Tuesday’s town council meeting that a by-election will take place in the new year.

Mayor Roger Morrill wanted to take the holiday season into consideration when setting the election dates.

All nominations for councillors have to be in by Jan. 9. Advance polls are being held on Jan. 28 and election day is Feb. 6.

Nelson has lived in Athabasca for the past 27 years.

“I love Athabasca,” she said. “I will always be an advocate for the area.”

Since Nelson is relocating, she has no choice but to resign as a town councillor.

Nelson was born in Provost, raised in Red Deer, and studied in Edmonton and London, Ontario.
