Incumbent and Reeve David Yurdiga retained his seat as councillor for the Grassland area (Division 7) today.

“It feels good, obviously. There’s more work that has to be done in the division, in Division 7,” said Yurdiga of the win.

Yurdiga received 167 votes compared to challenger Howard Hrynyk’s 62, according to unofficial election results.

“It was a good, clean race, so it was good competition, and I’m glad that the people turned out and voted, so it’s all good,” he said.

In the lead-up to the election, Yurdiga touted the importance of rural addressing in Athabasca County, as well as the need to experiment with economical surfacing for roads (he favours a material called fibre matting seal coat).

Yurdiga has also stressed the importance of beautifying the hamlets of Grassland, Atmore and Donatville.

Yurdiga will retain the role of Reeve at least until the new council’s organizational meeting near the end of the month.
