Athabasca RCMP is investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision that closed the overpass over the Highway 55/813 interchange for almost three hours on Saturday.
The single vehicle collision destroyed the guardrail on the north side of the road, and after hitting the bridge abutment, the car split in two. Golf clubs, a basketball and a baseball were thrown from the vehicle, and the back portion of the vehicle landed on the highway below the bridge.
RCMP believe speed to have been the main cause of the collision.
The male driver, and single occupant of the blue Ford Mustang, was pronounced dead on scene.
The traffic was rerouted while the scene was investigated.
No further information, included the name of the deceased, has been released.
