Alberta Health Services is warning swimmers to avoid the Calling Lake Provincial Park Beach after excess levels of fecal bacteria were detected in the lake.

CALLING LAKE - Alberta Health Services is asking beach goers to avoid swimming or wading into the water at the Calling Lake Provincial Park Beach due to elevated levels of fecal bacteria were detected in the water.

At the current levels, gastrointestinal illness can result from ingestion of the water at the lake, and skin, ear, and eye infections may occur as a result of contact with the water.

Elevated levels of fecal bacteria can result from several factors, including wildlife activity, rainfall, runoff, and land use. At this time, investigations are ongoing, and Alberta Health Services is monitoring the situation closely to ensure public safety," said Lisa Laferriere, a spokesperson for AHS.

Laferriere also warned against using the lake water for consumption, including cooking, at any time.

"AHS strongly advises against drinking or cooking with untreated water directly from any lake or reservoir, including Calling Lake, at any time. Residents should always use a safe, treated water source for drinking and cooking. If unsure about your water supply, please contact your local water provider or the local environmental public health office for guidance," she said.
