Ground and air efforts in works as crews battle Boyle blaze

State of local emergency declared in Athabasca County and the Village of Boyle

BOYLE - Firefighting crews are working to stop a wildfire burning south of the Village of Boyle as a southern wind is threatening to push the fire closer to the municipality.

Crews are constructing a berm south of the village, which is under a 72-hour evacuation alert in case conditions worsen, and water bombers have been called in to assist.

The forecast is calling for another hot and windy day tomorrow, but the Athabasca County Fire Department is hopeful ground work will help contain the fire.

Village residents are asked to do their part by being ready to evacuate if needed. Adequate food, water, and important supplies for a 72-hour period are part of the process. A complete list of supplies in an emergency kit can be found here.

Athabasca County and the Village of Boyle have both declared a state of local emergency.

"The public is advised that for the duration of the emergency, the local authority may take any action it deems necessary to deal with the situation," reads the notice on the county's website.
