Incumbent Aspen View School Division trustees fared well in Monday night’s election as all but one retained their seat.

In Athabasca Ward 1 (Smith) Edgar Koehler was re-elected over Lewis Semashkewich, 424 votes to 331.

In Athabasca Ward 3 (Town of Athabasca), Brian Bittorf retained his seat on school board, defeating Lynne MacLean 517-325

“I thank all the voters for turning out, and thank Lynne for running as well,” Bittorf said.

Wes Kowalchuk hung onto the Athabasca Division 4 seat (Boyle), beating Ron Epp 455-243.

“I believe in the education system and what I’ve brought in the last six years, and I hope to continue to do the best I can for the kids and the community in the future,” explained Kowalchuk.

In Athabasca Ward 5 (Grassland) Paul Ponich’s 236 votes were enough to turn back two challengers, Trevor Yeaman with 198 votes and Carmen Jensen-Tebb with 121.

“I’m pleased with the results and I will continue to represent my ward and do the best I can for our students and the division,” explained Ponich.

In Thorhild Ward 1, Penny Fehr was also re-elected.

The only incumbent defeated was Joe Gerlach in Athabasca Ward 2 (Rochester), bested by former Rochester School principal Dennis MacNeil, 455-215.

“I admire Joe Gerlach quite a bit. He deserves a big pat on the back for all the work he has done, so I’ve got some big shoes to fill,” said MacNeil.
