RCMP quell hostage situation

Residents of Athabasca saw a number of police vehicles pass through town on Sunday on their way to a hostage situation on the Bigstone Cree First Nation.

Residents of Athabasca saw a number of police vehicles pass through town on Sunday on their way to a hostage situation on the Bigstone Cree First Nation.

An adult male allegedly had three adults and five children under the age of five held hostage within a house approximately 25 kilometres east of Wabasca.

Soon after the police arrived, the brother of the suspect successfully negotiated the release of two adult women and the five children, who were transported to a safe location. Not long after, the suspect allowed his brother to leave as well. The suspect was armed with three long-barreled rifles of various caliber. He surrendered at approximately 6:30 p.m. and was arrested; no one was injured.

Archie Huddy Stewart, 24, is charged with forcible confinement, discharging a firearm with intent, pointing a firearm, and possession of a firearms while prohibited.

He is set to appear in Provincial Court April 18.
