After many consecutive days of rain, the Athabasca River has risen to engulf the Rotary Way trail along the waterfront.

“The Athabasca River is currently under a high stream flow advisory, and has been for several days,” said Carrie Sancartier from Alberta Environment. “A high flow advisory typically means that water levels in the river are rising and there is a possibility of flooding in low-lying areas, but no major flooding is expected.”

The water levels are peaking at the town of Athabasca, and are expected to remain high for the next few days.

“With the current forecast that we have, over the next few days we are not expecting to escalate the advisory beyond a high flow advisory,” Sancartier said. “We are currently monitoring conditions and will update the advisory as necessary.”

Over the past week residents of Athabasca have been sitting by the river and watching the water level rise.
