A change of venue

It may have changed venues, but a Barrhead Christmas dinner tradition will continue.

That was the message event organizer Alicia Schouten told to the Barrhead Leader Dec. 14 and she says the event, held for the last 21 years at the Barrhead United Church, will now be taking place at the Barrhead Canadian Reformed Church.

The event was started when a local restaurant organized a luncheon on Christmas Day in 1995. When the restaurant was no longer interested in hosting the event, friends Rita Lyster and Nancy Zylinski took over.

Last year, the United Church expressed an interest in letting another organization host the event.

“The Christmas dinner is usually put on by the United Church but this year we [Barrhead Canadian Reformed Church] are hosting it. The dinner is basically for anyone in our community, families or singles. It doesn’t matter so long as you aren’t alone on Christmas. Everyone is welcome,” Schouten said, noting the event starts at 1 p.m.

Schouten said tickets are available through the Barrhead &District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) office and the Barrhead United Church.

“You don’t need a ticket and while we would appreciate it if people did so in advance, there is no deadline for RSVPing. The tickets do make a nice little keepsake and it does help with planning however,” Schouten said, adding organizers expect around 100 people to attend.

“Last year we had around 80 people. We’ll be serving turkey, potatoes, veggies and some desserts.”

Barrhead Canadian Reformed Church is located at 6105 43 street, behind Wild Country Powersports.
