BARRHEAD – The 526 Barrhead Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron held its annual ceremonial review June 3 at the Barrhead Composite High School for the last time.
This time-honoured tradition has happened for the last 74 years and this year they announced the Barrhead Royal Canadian Legion #75 will be the new home of the 526 Barrhead Air Cadets next year.
“I want to reflect on what an incredible year it has been for 526. Our cadets have shown tremendous growth in skills, leadership and character,” said commanding officer Captain Kristian Olsen.
“From all the training nights and fundraising efforts to gliding and community events, each of you has contributed something valuable to our success.”
“You have proven that the commitment and teamwork can rise to any challenge.”
The event included an inspection of the cadets by reviewing officer Charles Mortimer and the reviewing party.
The dignitaries included Natasha Doherty, Air Cadet League of Canada North Wing director, Ross Pentney, Air Cadet League advisor, and Brian Wilcox, Squadron sponsoring committee chairperson.
The cadets performed an impressive march for the audience.
Squadron awards were presented to hard-working cadets by the reviewing party leaders, honoured speakers, Captain Susan Peters and Steve Bablitz, the Barrhead Royal Canadian Legion liaison.
A squadron promotion to Flight Sergeant was awarded to Sgt. Rachel Jensen.
Level 1 certificates were awarded to LAC Lily Olsen, LAC Forest Rouw, LAC Oskar Schmaus and LAC Brixtn Stumpf.
Level 2 certificates were awarded to LAC Alex Mackensie, Cpl. Riley Ronaasen, Cpl. Jacob Stitsen and Cpl. Ali Taphorn.
Level 3 certificates were awarded to Flight Corporal (FCpl.) Kennedie Jackson, FCpl. Aimee Stitsen and FCpl. April Stitsen.
Level 4 certificates were awarded to Flight Sergeant (FSgt.) Rachel Jensen and FSgt. Treyton Schneider.
Best Junior Cadet award was presented to FCpl. Aimee Stitsen by Shelly Oswald.
The Most Improved Cadet award was presented to FCpl. April Stitsen by Steve Bablitz.
Natasha Doherty presented the Outstanding Attendance awards to LAC Alice Stitsen, LAC Corwyn Mohl, LAC Oskar Schmaus, LAC Roux, LAC Olsen, FCpl. Ronaasen, WO2 Leo Schmaus, and FSgt. Treyton Schnider.
WO2 Leo Schmaus was awarded the Best Attendance Award by 526 Chairperson Brian Wilcox.
The Best Uniform Award was presented to WO2 Leo Schmaus by Captain Susan Peters.
FSgt. Treyton Schneider was presented the Terry Orr Award by Charles Mortimer.
The Peter Holland Award was won by WO2 Leo Schmaus by Ross Pentney.
The CO’s Leadership Award was presented to Dannan Mohl (retired) by Captain Kristian Olsen.
Mohl was also awarded the Years of Service Certificate for his six years of service.
Speeches were given with positive words of encouragement and congratulations on a job well done by all cadets by Mortimer, Doherty, Oswald, County Councillor Bill Lane, Wilcox, and Olsen.
Captain Olsen thanked his team and volunteers; Cheryl Schaffrick, Wendy Schmaus, Roger Thomas, Nik Down, Pentney, Bablitz, Woodcox, Amy Mohl, Sabine Jensen, Leanne Schneider, Aaron Mohl and Lynn Down.
