BARRHEAD – The Barrhead Demolition Derby 2025 was the spectacular event the audience expects to see from the high anticipated event each year with bigger prize winnings, and entertaining intermission activities on July 26.
“The drivers, my team and I do it because it brings joy and excitement to our communities,” said Ashley Mast, Derby organizer.
“Just seeing how much everyone loves it, bringing families together, and knowing they all have a passion for it means everything.”
Families for generations have competed in or attended the Demolition Derby, and it is a valued community tradition.
For 2025 there were eight entries in the car division and ten entries in the truck division.
The registrations were lower this year because there was another demolition derby in Legal on the same day.
There were five entries for the Power Wheels event for intermission where kids got to compete.
The kids loved it and so did the spectators according to Mast.
This was a new event to hold during intermission to give the drivers time to fix up their vehicles to compete in the finals.
Mast believes that no other derby in Alberta has this fantastic event offered and it was a big hit right before the metal-crushing final events of the day.
“Everyone goes home with one-of-a-kind trophies that are built by some of our Derby guys,” said Mast.
They're made from scrap vehicle parts that are welded together, painted and then clear coated.
The Barrhead Ag Society puts up big cash for all the winners.
First place takes home $4,000 for the truck and car categories.
In the truck category first place was won by Shawn Cotton. In the car category Lantz Reyne won first place.
Second place is $1,500 with third place earning $800.
The truck second place prize went to Kane Ross and Jesse Ross won second place in the cars category.
Third place in trucks was won by Mason VanGelder.
In the car category Ron/Thomas Campbell won third place.
Fourth place in trucks was won by Mandi Coleridge and in cars it was Rochelle Kennedy, both winning $500.
There are Mad Dog winners where the most aggressive driver per category is awarded $1000 per winner.
The Mad Dog Truck winner was Shawn Cotton.
Jesse Ross was named Mad Dog winner for cars.
Power Hour winner’s prize is $100 per category.
Truck Power Hour winner was Mandi Coleridge.
Car Power Hour winner was Edwin VanGelder.
Kyle Dregner was named Truck Grudge winner and Ron/Thomas Campbell was named Grudge winner for cars.
Even the little guys in the Power Wheels went home with their own cute little one-of-a-kind trophy.
Riley and Bristol Driessen were Power Wheels winners.
Horizon Ag and Turf sponsored a toy prize and Big Mike's Welding gave a $100 cash prize.
Neerlandia Co-op sent them home with a little flashlight goodie bag.
“My biggest, exciting moment for everyone is just seeing the excitement in the crowd,”
“It is the most attended event in our entire community.”
Mast is hopeful there are more drivers in the 2026 Demolition Derby.
New drivers are encouraged to build a car and compete.
“We have a team of veteran drivers that would be more than willing to help a new driver learn the ropes in the build,” said Mast.
“I definitely know that I can speak for some of my friends and they would love to teach the younger generation so we can keep the Demolition Derby going.”
Ryan Roy was the announcer this year and Mast said he did a great job.
He has announced at other events, and this was his first demolition derby.
“We are very proud of our community and thank our fans, the Barrhead AG Society, and our drivers.”
“Of course, this event would definitely not happen without our sponsors and everyone’s support.”
There were 23 volunteers, two safety technicians, and 11 officials that made the Demolition Derby happen.
Heavy Equipment at the derby was provided by Barrhead Auto Parts, Mahar Drilling and Braucht Resources.
Mast expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved.
