Barrhead Town Council has approved road closures for August 24 to accommodate a triathlon event, marking the return of this multi-sport competition to the community.

BARRHEAD –Residents can expect temporary traffic disruptions on Aug. 24 after Barrhead Town Council approved a request to close several streets and parking areas for a triathlon event.

At the July 8 Barrhead Town Council Meeting, a request for road closures for a triathlon was approved.

“We are looking for a couple of closure requests,” said Shallon Trouet, director of Parks and Recreation.

The Road Closure Requests extend from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 24. for the event that includes biking, running and swimming.

The first request includes a portion of 49 Street from 54 Avenue to 57 Avenue, the service road along the Splash Park from the Rodeo Road intersection to the Pure Glass intersection.

The road running east to west, north of Pure Glass to Rose Garden Chapel, 54 Avenue from 49 Street to 48 Street, is also included in the request.

In addition, the request included the closure of the parking lot near the Bowling Alley and Regional Pool from 8 p.m. on Aug. 23 to 2 p.m. on Aug. 24.

Triathlon events have been held in Barrhead in the past.

The Parks and Recreation department is working with Casey Lee-Cox, who is leading the triathlon project, bringing this event back to Barrhead this year.

At the Feb. 11 Barrhead Town Council meeting, a motion was made to support the event.

There is limited impact on traffic within the town of Barrhead due to the nature of the event and the timing of the actual activities.

It is expected that both residents and local businesses in Barrhead should have minimal disruption throughout the course of the event.

Proposed routes for running and cycling portions of the triathlon have been submitted by the Triathlon Committee.

Special consideration has been given to emergency services to ensure response routes are not affected by the triathlon activities.

The Triathlon Committee’s objective was to develop a safe route that would provide an outstanding experience for participants and allow Barrhead residents to cheer on athletes.

There will be communication, signage, and clear public messaging to keep all residents informed.

It is expected that 150 participants will be in Barrhead for the triathlon, and the committee is recruiting 100 volunteers to help facilitate the event.

The triathlon is open to anyone from the ages of three to 99 to participate.

Public Works will set up and take down barricades and signage on the days of the parking lot and road closures.
