BARRHEAD - The Barrhead Golf and Recreation Area Society will have a little more money to complete its latest renovation.
On Feb. 18, County of Barrhead councillors unanimously approved a $2,500 Community Policy Grant application by a 6 - 0 vote.
Coun. Jared Stoik was absent.
The society will put the funds towards offsetting the cost of replacing the carpet in the clubhouse's dining room, estimated at $13,200.
The policy, which has been in place since February 2021, allows eligible community organizations meeting specific criteria to receive up to $2,500 in funding for a project or event that benefits county residents.
To be eligible for a community grant, groups or organizations must be registered non-profit societies, charitable organizations, volunteer groups, or service clubs that provide services within or that are readily accessible to county residents. Groups must also be in good standing with the municipality and can demonstrate that the grant will be used for a project, service, structure, or event.
The program funding pool is capped at $15,000 annually.
In August 2024, councillors removed roughly $10,000 of recurring grants from the Community Policy Grant funding pool to free up additional funds for the pool, adding them as recurrent items in the municipal budget.
The council opted to remove those organization's annual funding requests because the program's popularity had effectively bankrupted the pool fund, which had six months remaining before the municipality topped it back up.
County manager Debbie Oyarzun said administration recommends that the council approve the application, adding the society met all the policy's requirements.
The municipality had a recreation lease agreement along with the Town of Barrhead since 1981. The current agreement expires on Sept. 30, 2041.
In March 2022, the society received a similar grant, which they put towards clubhouse washroom improvements.
