BARRHEAD - Sree Prakash, a nine-year-old member of the Barrhead LEGO club, won the LEGO Level It Up contest for her Mushroom Forest LEGO creation in the structures category.
Her LEGO build was the overall voter favourite, gaining the most votes from all entries through online voting on a nationwide basis over three weeks.
“This is the second year the library has participated, and this year we sponsored five kids’ LEGO structures in the contest,” said Kyle Hughes, LEGO man at the Barrhead Library.
When the $500 gift card prize was announced to Sree Prakash she said she didn’t want the whole prize.
She wanted to donate a portion to the Barrhead Library and a portion to the Autism Awareness campaign.
With the help of Hughes, Prakash was able to make her donations.
She gave $100 to the Barrhead library and $100 to Autism Awareness.
Level It Up is a national LEGO contest that started in Manitoba for autism awareness, wrapping up by April 2, Autism Awareness Day.
It's a fundraiser so it costs money to enter, and the library offered the Lego Club a chance to compete for free.
There are five categories in the Level It Up contest with a $500 gift card prize for each category.
Participants are 18 years or older or kids with parent sponsors.
Each person entering can submit one build in each of the categories.
Online votes decided the winner of each category.
The categories were:
- Animals, People and Plants
- Structures
- Vehicles
- Communities and Stories
- Creative Project
Hughes explained that kids built their structures at the library, and the library then chose their five favourites to enter in the competition.
The library covered the $10 registration costs for the five kids whose structures were chosen.
Kids were welcome to enter on their own if they wanted to.
Last year, the Barrhead Library didn't win anything, but this year, two local kids who won their categories.
The winners’ builds will be featured on the website and social media channels.
