Barrhead's new gravel/sand truck involved in fender-bender on its first day

Bad first day on the job

BARRHEAD - The County of Barrhead's newest sanding truck had a rude introduction to its work life after being involved in a motor vehicle collision at Two-mile Corner north of Barrhead at the Highway 18 and 33 intersection on May 14. No one was injured in the collision.

The county vehicle was heading towards Westlock on Highway 18 to Wabash Manufacturing to have its sand/salt holding tank installed.

"Our truck was heading eastbound, and there was a person at the intersection waiting to either go across or make a left-hand turn, who pulled out in front of our truck," he said, crediting the county vehicle driver. "He was going to hit the other vehicle right in the driver's side door, and he was able to go out into the other lane as far as he could, but unfortunately, he couldn't avoid the collision, but was able to minimize the risk to the other driver."

The sander is now back at the manufacturer, Western Star Trucks, and is being repaired.

Deputy reeve Marvin Schatz asked if public works had planned to use the vehicle this fall.

Hove said yes, adding that the truck that will replace it is still in service and is available until its return.
