BARRHEAD — For the second year in a row, the Barrhead Composite High School (BCHS) Gryphons senior boys volleyball team emerged from the North Central 3A Zone Championship as victors.
The Gryphons defeated the host team, R.F. Staples School from Westlock, in the championship final of the tournament held on Nov. 18-19.
The final match was decided in two hard-fought sets, which Barrhead won 25-23 and 25-20.
Prior to the final, Barrhead had started out in round robin action by finishing first in their pool. They first defeated Morinville Central High School 25-11 and 25-23, then followed up with a victory over Frank Maddock High School from Drayton Valley (25-12, 25-13).
Earning a bye into the semi-finals, BCHS defeated Edwin Parr Composite from Athabasca to move on to the finals with Westlock, which had placed first in its respective pool.
The Gryphons are now competing at the 3A Boys Volleyball Provincials in Lethbridge from Nov. 24-26.
In 2021, the BCHS boys had placed third at provincials after losing to Magrath in the semifinals and defeating Camrose in the bronze medal match.
More details about how the BCHS played at provincials will be published in the Nov. 29 edition of the Town & Country This Week.
