The Canadian Blood Services (CBS) continues to be impressed by the generosity of the community of Barrhead says charge nurse, Terry Parsons.
The CBS-sponsored blood donor clinic at the multipurpose room of the Barrhead Agrena Jan. 19 exceeded her expectations.
“Our goal for events like this is to have 92 donors and this time we had 132 confirmed bookings,” Parsons said, adding Barrhead’s residents always turn out in record numbers.
Among the donors was 26-year-old Deanna Exley, who said she was eager to give her 22nd donation.
“I think this is a wonderful opportunity to help people and more should donate,” Exley said.
Volunteer Mark Oberg agreed, adding he thought more people should volunteer.
“I do this all the time and I’m always impressed by the turnout,” he said, adding it was surprising to him to see the multipurpose room fill up quickly.
“It starts with a trickle and goes from there most of the time.”
Parsons said while there are new regulations for donors, some restrictions have been eased as well.
“Individuals who have had cancer or other similar illnesses in the past, and if they aren’t currently undertaking treatment, if they are interested in donating, I would advise them to call the clinic ahead of time and speak with a nurse. The restrictions placed on them before aren’t as stringent as they used to be.”
