Town of Barrhead councillors passed a motion during their Nov. 24 meeting to approve the temporary closure of a portion of 51st Avenue next summer, which will allow the Blue Heron Support Services Association to host its outdoor market.
The closure of 51st Avenue between 49A Street and 51st Street will occur from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday from June 26 to Aug. 28.
However, it is contingent on the Blue Heron Support Services Association obtaining all applicable provincial approvals and adhering to COVID-19 protocols.
The town received a letter from the Blue Heron Support Services Association in early October thanking the municipality for closing that portion of 51st Avenue this past summer so they could host the Main Street Summer Market, along with providing the necessary barricades.
“Although the summer market was slow to get started, as the summer progressed it did pick up,” executive director Diane Magill states in the letter. “We feel both the weather and the inability to start preparing earlier in the year due to COVID-19 were factors in the slow start.”
Magill adds there has been a lot of interest and positive feedback from vendors, community members and local businesses.
“We had many requests asking us to continue the market into the fall, as well as many inquiries if we would do it again next year.”
The letter states there had only been one negative comment posted to Facebook about the street being closed.
