A small garage was destroyed as the result of the first grass fire of the season.
At about 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, the Barrhead Fire Department responded to report to a grass fire near Dunstable on Highway 777.
Deputy fire chief Gary Hove said when the department arrived the fire was already about one acre in size and a small garage on the property was fully engulfed.
“The homeowners were already fighting the fire and we just took over,” he said.
Initially the department responded with two tenders, an engine and its rapid attack wildland unit, but after arriving on scene it was determined wasn’t needed.
Within 20 minutes of the fire department’s arrival the fire was under control and in less than an hour it was extinguished. Units stayed on scene for another two hours to make sure there wasn’t any hot spots that could reignite.
Hove said that although there is still snow in areas and the ground is damp, a lot of the vegetation is dry.
“The top of the grass is starting to dry out, especially with the warmer days we are having and the wind,” he said. “It’s definitely something people need to be aware of when they are working around their yard that things are drying out and with it becoming fire hazards.”
