The Barrhead Main Street Merchants Association and the Pembina West Co-op are hosting a Frosty the Snowman-themed scavenger hunt in Barrhead this week to ring in the holiday season. "A Frosty Hometown Christmas" will also feature a visit from Santa and his elves to the Co-op on Saturday, Dec. 5.

To ring in the holiday season in a safe way, the Barrhead Main Street Merchants Association are hosting a scavenger hunt this week where children will look for clues posted in the windows of downtown businesses in order to fill in the story of Frosty the Snowman.

“A Frosty Hometown Christmas” is being hosted with the assistance of the Pembina West Co-op, according to marketing and member relations manager Brittany Schuurman.

Schuurman said that on Wednesday, Dec. 2, the story of Frosty the Snowman will be posted to the Pembina West Co-op’s website, which can be visited at: www.pembinawestco-op.crs/

The story will be available for families to download and print out. There will also be physical copies available at the Co-ops service desk, though because of COVID-19 protocols, they obviously encourage families to download it on their own.

The clues to fill in the book will also be placed in the windows of downtown merchants. Schuurman said the clues will allude to parts of Frosty the Snowman’s story, like when he got his magic hat.

To be clear, the clues will be readily visible in the front windows of participating businesses. “You don’t need to go indoors in any building,” Schuurman noted.

The scavenger hunt can be done during the week, but if children wait until Saturday, Dec. 5, some of the downtown merchants may be handing out little treats from 1-5 p.m.

The prize in the scavenger hunt, according to the Pembina West Co-op’s website, is one of five gift baskets.

The completed Frosty the Snowman stories can then be brought down to the Co-op between 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 5.

During that time, Santa and his elves will be set up outside the Home Centre to receive the scavenger hunt books. They will also be handing out special treats and people can also drop off a letter to Santa or a donation for Santa’s Toybox.

‘That will all be from the comfort and safety of your vehicle,” Schuurman said, noting it will be kind of similar in format to the drive-through trick or treat they held at Halloween.

Participants in the scavenger hunt will also be entered to win a prize if they post a picture of their “scavenger hunt team” to Instagram or Facebook. The photos must tag the Barrhead Main Street Merchants Association and must include the hashtag #frostybarrhead.

Schuurman noted there will also be some additional locations for people to drop off their storybooks, though they are still figuring out which merchants will do that. In any case, that information will be included along with the storybook.
