Turning 100 is just another day, says new centenarian Eric Beniston.

Last week, the Hillcrest resident, who turned 100 on March 26, celebrated his birthday with friends and family in the common room of Klondike Place.

Benniston was born in Estevan, Sask. in 1917 and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as part of its ground crew during the Second World War.

“My dad was a coal miner and we moved around quite a bit when I was growing up,” Benniston said, adding the family eventually settled in Edmonton and later in Alberta Beach.

“I finished my schooling there and after that, I worked in logging camps and on farms in the area,” he added.

In addition to serving with the ground crew of the RCAF, Benniston said he worked for a company called NorthWestern Utilities.

“They are part of ATCO now, but I worked for them for 30 years and when I retired, I moved to Barrhead and I’m happy where I am. Getting to 100 is alright but I think the most important thing for people to remember is to be active,” he said, adding he had his licence until his birthday and only recently sold his car.
