Woodlands County residents who wish to put their name forward for the 2021 municipal election will have the option of filing their nominations at the Fort Assiniboine regional office instead of having to go to the main office in Whitecourt.
During their Nov. 17 meeting, Woodlands County councillors unanimously passed all three readings on Bylaw 560-20, which allows the municipality to designate multiple locations where a Deputy Returning officer may receive nominations.
Director of corporate services Alicia Bourbeau said this bylaw came to council as a result of changes to the Local Authorities Election Act.
“It simply allows our residents an opportunity to have a nomination office closer to them, not expecting everyone to travel to one office,” she said.
In order to apply to the 2021 municipal election, Bourbeau noted this bylaw would need to be passed before Dec. 31, 2020.
The bylaw will remain in force from Jan. 1, 2021 to noon on Sept. 20, 2021, which is the final nomination day.
County council also passed a motion appointing Bourbeau as the returning officer for the 2021 election.
She was previously named as the returning officer for the by-election that was supposed to take place in December 2019, which ended with Anselmo councillor Dave Kusch winning by acclamation.
