BARRHEAD – Pembina Hills School Division superintendent Brett Cooper, school trustees and principals held student council meetings throughout the division at each school to hear from students’ opinions.
“We were deeply impressed by the thoughtful and insightful contributions from our students,” said Cooper.
“Their perspectives on what makes their school experiences positive and their ideas for change are invaluable as we continue to strive for excellence.”
The student feedback sessions were held with students from different grades.
They were asked to share their insights into positive things about school and areas for improvement.
Information regarding their learning was gathered to address the Pembina Hills School Division Assessment Framework.
These sessions were held in the first quarter of 2025 and Cooper said the students provided great information.
The information collected was shared with all School Trustees and gaining the direct knowledge from students on their experiences and priorities.
Areas of discussion included school environment and atmosphere, teacher and staff support, Learning and academics, social and emotional well-being, activities and extracurriculars.
School policies and logistics as well as motivation and attendance were also discussed.
Cooper said the students who participated did appreciate have a voice and providing input.
Common opinions given were the appreciation for caring and approachable teachers, making learning fun, connecting learning to real-world applications, and the variety of activities.
Areas for consideration or improvements suggested were more creative activities and course variety, more resources and shorter bus rides.
A common request was for longer breaks at lunch and recess.
Those opinions reflect student needs and goals which are important to take into consideration for division decisions as per the Pembina Hills School Division website.
There are plans to complete another round of student council meetings in the next school year.
