Woodlands County Council approved the rezoning of the Fort Assiniboine Church property to residential zoning at a public hearing July 17.
The Fort Assiniboine Church is located on the property at the corner of University Avenue and 2nd Street east.
The application was submitted on May 27 to consider the rezoning from the Public/Institutional zoning to Residential zoning, prior to the new owners beginning a residential development plan.
The United Church trustees signed off on the rezoning application prior to the new owners taking possession, according to the application.
“We are aligned to respect the views of everyone and allow the time to speak without interruption,” Reeve Kusch, councillor for division 1, stated.
“Public hearings are to allow input on facts and offer the public an opportunity to provide their feedback.”
The public meeting was advertised in the Barrhead Leader for two weeks to make people aware of the planned event and the details.
No-one from the public spoke for or against the matter at the public hearing.
No letters, positive or negative, were received from the public.
Referral agencies did respond to give their input on the re-zoning request according to Joshua Raposo, Planning Supervisor.
Apex has no objections and offered assistance to the owners if needed, and neither Fortis, Telus or Woodlands Field Services division had any objections.
Alberta Transportation responded with expectations that the municipality would handle any added volume to the highways.
There were no concerns from the Woodlands County Administrative group. No councillors had any questions.
Raposo recommended the second and third readings of the rezoning for Fort Assiniboine’s lot 5 and 6 be completed as there were no concerns and all of the application requirements are in order.
The second and third reading were both voted on and carried.
The new owners, Catherine and Frobert Makepeace, take possession on July 5 of the property and can now move forward with their residential development plan.
