Three police vehicles of the Barrhead RCMP detachment had tires slashed over the weekend and Sgt. Bob Dodds says he thinks the incident is related to a spike in stolen vehicle activity over the weekend.

Barrhead residents are not the only ones targeted by the criminal element says Barrhead RCMP Sgt. Bob Dodds.

“This last weekend alone, we had three trucks and a car stolen, a vehicle we believe was a super duty [pickup truck] that burned out and a slew of stolen wallets taken from parked vehicles,” Dodds said, adding the police station itself was targeted April 3.

“Three of our police cars that were in our parking lot were targeted by the people we believe were responsible for the other thefts and had the tires slashed,” he said.

The police department has video surveillance footage of a young woman believed to have used stolen credit cards in Gunn and Alberta Beach.

“She used them to buy cigarettes. Hopefully we solve this one quickly,” he added.

Dodds said at the time of the tire-slashing incident only one detachment member was on duty.

“They took the time to slash the tires of our cars when there was only one member working anyway and he was out on patrol,” Dodds said, adding the responsible parties left foot impressions and a weapon at the scene.

Dodds said it is frustrating to see such brazen behaviour.

“It happened right in the detachment’s parking lot and it gives you a pretty good idea where these people are at mentally,” he said, adding the level of disregard for public safety is concerning.

“Just when you think you’ve put the lid on things, something like this happens,” Dodds said.
