Hungry for a second bite at the Taste of Barrhead? Well here’s some news to savour – the event is back on September 28.

“It’s a go,” declared Barrhead Public Library director Elaine Dickie, one of the organizers.

“It was huge last year. We really appreciated the response of the community – it was beyond our expectations. We are glad to bring it back.”

The Barrhead &District Chamber of Commerce is again hosting the event at Barrhead Elementary School gym from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

It will be a highlight of the Alberta Culture Days celebration, which will feature a packed program of activities throughout the weekend.

Dickie said there would be 32 tables showcasing the food of different countries.

“Already about seven or eight countries have been signed up,” she said.

Tables will be offered first to Chamber members, who have until June 25 to commit.

After that anyone in the community will have a chance to book one on a first-come, first-served basis. Vendors, for example, could be business owners, churches, school groups, caterers, charity groups and 4-H groups.

The cost per table is $30. There is a $100 deposit, refundable if the table is used.

“If you want to participate, don’t hesitate, reserve your table, have fun and show everybody what Taste of Barrhead has to offer,” said Dickie.

“We don’t want duplicates so once a country will be represented, no other business can pick this country.”

Dickie explained how the event worked. People, she said, can buy $1 tokens at the door and then visit different booths.

Vendors are responsible for decorating their booths, which should sell snack-size food that can be bought for $1, $2 or a maximum of $3. The food should be from the country represented at the booth.

Dickie said only food that is prepared would be sold in the gym. Prepackaged cookies or others will be sold in the hallways.

“The Chamber will sell pop, water etc. that night so we ask only for food at the booths,” said Dickie. “After the event the vendor will hand in all the tokens to the Chamber and will be given money for their tokens.”

The local health inspector has supplied the Chamber with rules and regulations about how to handle food that day.

Once people have committed to a table, they will receive a complete package with all the information.

The Taste of Barrhead committee will be meeting on Thursday to discuss plans.
