Emergency responders were called out to a three-vehicle accident on Highway 18 at Range Road 40 on Sept. 1.

BARRHEAD-Emergency first personnel responded to a three-vehicle collision on Sept. 1 resulted in five injuries and caused Highway 18 at Range Road 40 to be closed for several hours.

The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m.

Barrhead RCMP Sgt. Bob Dodds said an eastbound pickup truck was waiting to turn north onto Range Road 40 when it was rear-ended. The collision caused the SUV to swerve into the oncoming lane. It was then hit headon by a westbound car.

"(All) five occupants sustained injuries ranging from minor to very serious," he said.

Dodd added that the driver of the westbound car, a 59-year-old Onoway woman, was transported to an Edmonton hospital via STARS Air Ambulance, while the remaining patients were taken to the Barrhead Healthcare Centre by ground ambulance.

The highway reopened to traffic at 8 p.m.
