Those out and about in the community may have noticed the small house-shaped boxes appearing around town which, upon further inspection, are filled with books.
These are Barrhead’s new Little Free Libraries, a project headed by local coalition Communities for Children.
The coalition is encouraging everyone to take a book and leave a book. It’s a way to borrow new books without worrying about membership fees, due dates, or library fines.
It’s also a way for residents to pass on the books they no longer have use for.
The first LFL appeared in Barrhead at the Splash Park a few weeks ago, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Barrhead. Now there are little libraries outside the Barrhead Public Library, sponsored by TD Bank, and FCSS, sponsored by Sunnyside Realty.
Those who plan to use the LFL outside the library should note this is not a replacement for the Barrhead Public Library. Users should not return library books to the LFL, or bring LFL books into the library.
The coalition has plans to put up a fourth little library outside Connie May’s General Store near Lac La Nonne.
Although the coalition is gearing the project towards children ages five and under, the mini libraries are for children of all ages, as well as adults.
