The Barrhead Fire Department and emergency medical personnel responded to two different calls on Highway 18 May 30.
Fire chief John Whittaker said the first call, a multiple vehicle collision, occurred at approximately 7 p.m.
“We received a call about a collision involving two vehicles at the junction of Highway 18 and Range Road 43,” Whittaker said, adding he did not believe failing sunlight was a factor.
“A grey truck, turning east off 43, was attempting to head north when it collided with a car heading west. The driver of the truck, who refused treatment, was released on scene. However, the other driver involved, a woman, was transported to Barrhead Health Centre due to injuries. Both individuals were stable when we [fire department] left the scene but unfortunately the woman’s condition deteriorated rapidly and was flown to Edmonton via STARS this morning at around 1 a.m.,” he said, adding at this time Whittaker did not know the status of the driver.
In addition to the first call, at 11:30 p.m., firefighters and Barrhead RCMP officers responded to a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Range Road 40 and Highway 18.
Whittaker said the driver of the vehicle drove into the high-tension cable barrier in the vicinity and believed alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
Barrhead RCMP detachment Cpl. Riley Sutherland agreed.
“Criminal charges have been filed and the individual is expected to make an appearance in Barrhead provincial court,” Sutherland said.
