Volunteers needed for local festival

The Street Festival is coming June 11 and the committee wants you to volunteer.

The festival has a variety of activities scheduled to coincide with two very big additions — the Barbeque Cook-Off, formerly a part of Blue Heron Fair Days, as well as the Barrhead Fire Department sponsored Hose Coupling Competition, said committee chair Elaine Dickie.

“We are looking for people to help us with setting up, to help us get organized, and with clean-up at the end of the day,” she said, adding the best way to get involved is to get in touch with one of the committee members or by contacting Lynda Leng at the Barrhead Leader.

On set-up and clean-up duties, fellow committee member Meagan Pecjak added the majority of the work will involve assisting food vendors with their booths, as well as the placement of tables, chairs and other items.

“They may also be asked to supervise some of the on-going activities throughout the day, in addition to general duties,” Pecjak said.

It takes many hands to put together an event such as this, Dickie said, and the hard work of everyone involved is appreciated.

“Extra hands means that everybody gets to share in the fun,” she added.

The festival, which will include previous mainstays such as the petting zoo, bouncy castle and volleyball, Pecjak said, is aimed at providing families and other community members with a full day of fun and entertainment, and according to Dickie, will be preceeded by the 17th annual soap box derby.

“The streets will be filled with people and there is going to be lots to do for all ages,” Dickie added. Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Street Festival can contact Leng, Pecjak, or Cami Hall at (780) 674-3823.
