Woodlands County approves pilot program for local AG producers

New logo identifier for local producers at markets to get shoppers attention being implemented by Woodlands County

Woodlands County has approved a pilot program to supports and highlight local Woodlands businesses at market events, in hopes of creating a local advantage with shoppers.

The project was approved at the June 19 county council meeting.

“Earlier this year we had a delegation come in and stress the value of the committee putting out a local Woodlands brand," Bert Roach, the county's economic development officer, said.

Coun. Bruce Prestidge, for Blue Ridge, asked about the cost which was $2,000 already allocated in the budget for advertising.

“On behalf of committee extend appreciation working towards this and this demonstrates really good communication," said Coun. Alan Deane, for Whitecourt Central.

Woodlands County was successful in their Small Community Opportunities Program application.

The will initiate activities to better understand and support to overcome obstacles faced by local agricultural growers who market their products at local events.

It was recognized by the committee that this support for local producers could not wait to be implemented.

Logo options have been developed and a winning logo will be selected by polls of county groups and councillors.

Local businesses will be provided with the chosen logo to use at farmer market events this year.

Data will be gathered from the local businesses to determine if this identifier creates a unique competitive advantage and increases sales.

Local businesses with an approved development permit on file with Woodlands County can investigate if they meet the criteria to become involved in the Woodlands Local program.

The Economic Development Committee will add those local businesses to the Woodlands County business directory.

The Woodlands Local Pilot Program will be absorbed in the existing Economic Development budget for 2024.
