PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit four home runs in Philadelphia’s 19-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night to become the fourth Phillies player and 21st major leaguer to accomplish the feat.
Schwarber was 4 for 6 with a Phillies-record nine RBIs. He took the outright National League homer lead with 49 and moved within one of Seattle’s Cal Raleigh for the major league lead. Schwarber leads the majors with 119 RBIs.
Mike Schmidt was the last Philadelphia player to hit four homers in a game, doing at the Chicago Cubs in April 1976. Schwarber had the third four-homer game of the season, following Eugenio Suárez and Nick Kurtz.
The Philadelphia star started the power surge with a solo shot in the first off Cal Quantrill (4-12), sending a 2-1, curveball into the seats in right field. Scharber hit a flyout to center in the second.
After Quantrill was lifted with one out and two runners on base in the fourth, Schwarber greeted lefty Austin Cox by sending a 3-2 curveball over the wall in right for his fourth multi-homer game of the season.
With “M-V-P! M-V-P!” chants ringing down from Phillies fans in the fifth, Schwarber launched a three-run, opposite-field drive off Cox to put Philadelphia ahead 15-3. In the eighth, Schwarber hit a three-run shot to right off Wander Suero to make it 18-4.
Schwarber popped out in the eighth to short left field with third baseman Vidal Bruján on the mound.
After Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola (3-7) labored through a three-run, 37-pitch first inning, Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Max Kepler homered in the bottom of the inning. Bryce Harper also went deep for Philadelphia, which had 20 hits and 19 RBIs.
RED SOX 3, ORIOLES 2
BALTIMORE (AP) — Romy Gonzalez hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, Rob Refsnyder homered in his return from a strained left oblique, and the Boston Red Sox earned a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to complete a four-game sweep Thursday.
Trevor Story also homered for Boston, which went 7-1 on a two-city road trip that began against the New York Yankees. The Red Sox lead the Yankees by a game for the AL’s top wild card.
Alex Jackson went deep for Baltimore, which went 1-7 on its homestand against Houston and Boston. The last-place Orioles are a season-high 18 games out of first in the AL East.
Roman Anthony drew a leadoff walk in the eighth against Rico Garcia (0-1), moved to second on Story’s one-out grounder and scored when Gonzalez ripped a single to left.
Jordan Hicks (2-7) pitched a scoreless seventh. Steven Matz worked the ninth for his second save.
Garrett Crochet surrendered two runs in six innings for Boston. He struck out seven to raise his season total to a majors-best 214, two more than Detroit’s Tarik Skubal.
Jackson homered to lead off the third. Jeremiah Jackson hit an RBI double to tie it at 2 in the fifth, but Crochet struck out Gunnar Henderson and got Ryan Mountcastle to line into a double play to strand two in scoring position.
Baltimore starter Cade Povich gave up solo home runs to Story in the first inning and Refsnyder in the fourth. He allowed two runs in five innings and struck out five.
ASTROS 4, ROCKIES 3
HOUSTON (AP) — Christian Walker homered twice, capped by a tiebreaking solo shot in the eighth inning to lift Houston to a win over Colorado.
The game was tied 3-3 with no outs when Walker sent the first pitch from Luis Peralta (1-2) into left center field. Walker also homered in the first inning to make this the 15th multi-homer game of his career.
Jose Altuve also homered for the Astros, who won a second straight after dropping the series opener.
The Rockies had a chance to take the lead when they loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh. Jordan Beck reached on a catcher’s interference call on César Salazar, but Kaleb Ort struck out Brenton Doyle to leave everyone stranded.
Bryan King (4-3) threw a scoreless eighth for the win and Bryan Abreu allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
Altuve and Walker hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the first inning to put Houston up 2-0. Mauricio Dubón scored on a bunt single by Salazar to push the lead to 3-0.
CARDINALS 4, PIRATES 1
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Thomas Saggese hit a go-ahead RBI double and Jordan Walker homered in a three-run seventh inning to help St. Louis beat Pittsburgh.
Miles Mikolas allowed one run on four hits and a walk and struck out five in five innings.
Kyle Leahy (4-1) recorded four strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief, Riley O’Brien pitched a scoreless eighth and JoJo Romero pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
Pirates rookie Braxton Ashcraft allowed one run on four hits and recorded five strikeouts in a career-best 5 2/3 innings before being replaced by Yohan Ramírez (1-2).
Iván Herrera lined a double to left field, scoring Lars Nootbaar to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the third inning.
Tommy Pham lined his eighth home run of the season 440 feet over the left-field bullpen in the first inning to put Pittsburgh ahead 1-0.
DIAMONDBACKS 6, BREWERS 4
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks roughed up Milwaukee starter José Quintana for six early runs and got an effective start from Nabil Crismatt in a win over the Brewers, earning a split of the four-game series with the major league’s top team.
Crismatt (2-0), making his third career start, gave up eight hits and four runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander walked one and struck out two while throwing 60 of his 85 pitches for strikes.
Sal Frelick belted his third leadoff home run of the season to give the Brewers an early lead, but the Diamondbacks responded with three runs in the second. Quintana hit Tyler Locklear with a pitch with the bases loaded and Ildemaro Vargas hit a two-run single.
After the Brewers cut the lead to 3-2 in their half of the inning, the Diamondbacks tacked on three more runs in the third, two crossing on Alek Thomas’ single.
Isaac Collins drove in a pair for the Brewers in the third, cutting the lead to 6-4.
Quintana (10-5) had one of his worst starts this season, giving up five hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings while throwing 95 pitches.
Taylor Rashi, making his major league debut, pitched three scoreless innings to notch the save. He retired pinch-hitter Christian Yelich with two runners on to end it.
GIANTS 4, CUBS 3
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Willy Adames homered twice, Jung Hoo Lee singled in the winning run in the ninth inning and San Francisco beat Chicago to complete a three-game sweep.
It was the Giants 10th walk-off win this season and extended their winning streak to five games.
San Francisco’s offense didn’t do much outside of Adames’ homers until the ninth.
Casey Schmitt drew a one-out walk from Daniel Palencia (1-4) and took second on Wilmer Flores’ single. Lee then singled to right to score pinch-runner Christian Koss, who slid into home as the throw sailed wide of the plate.
Michael Busch hit his 25th home run for the Cubs. Dansby Swanson also went deep for Chicago.
Ryan Walker (5-4), the third of three relievers used by Giants manager Bob Melvin, retired one batter for the win.
MARLINS 7, METS 4
NEW YORK (AP) — Costly errors by first baseman Pete Alonso and left fielder Brandon Nimmo helped Miami score three unearned runs in the seventh inning of a victory over the sloppy New York Mets.
Nimmo hit a two-run double in the first and Alonso launched a two-run homer in the fifth, tying it 4 with his 30th longball this season. But the Mets made three errors in all that led to five unearned runs, halting their momentum following a three-game sweep of NL East-leading Philadelphia.
New York fell five games behind the Phillies, who routed Atlanta 19-4 at home, with 28 remaining. The second-place Mets are four games in front of Cincinnati for the final National League wild card.
Otto López had a pair of RBI singles for the Marlins (63-71), who bounced back in the opener of a four-game series after getting outscored 23-3 at home by the Braves over the previous two days.
Cade Gibson (3-5) struck out three in 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Calvin Faucher pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save.
YANKEES 10, WHITE SOX 4
CHICAGO (AP) — Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham hit two-run homers and Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a solo shot as the New York Yankees extended their winning streak to five games with a victory over Chicago.
Bellinger (three hits) and Grisham homered for the second straight game and Chisholm finished with two hits and RBIs.
White Sox first baseman Miguel Vargas hit his first career grand slam in the second inning and then left the game with in the fifth with a left wrist contusion after being clipped by Aaron Judge.
The Yankees homered for the sixth straight game, with 18 total in that span.
Will Warren (8-6) pitched five innings for the win, allowing four runs on five hits. The runs, on Vargas’ 14th homer, were ruled unearned after the White Sox loaded the bases on an error, walk and a hit batter.
Tyler Alexander (4-12), Chicago’s first reliever, was charged with the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings
Bellinger hit his 26th homer in the first inning, Chisholm belted his 26th in the second, and Grisham added his 27th in the eighth.
