EDMONTON — Alberta's daily count of new COVID-19 cases continues to soar as its leaders resort to new measures to remind people of tighter restrictions brought in to bring numbers under control.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province's chief medical officer of health, said via Twitter that there had been 2,433 new infections recorded Saturday and the province's test-positivity rate is now at 12 per cent.

It's the third straight day Alberta has exceeded 2,000 new cases.

Hinshaw reported one new death on Saturday.

The province took the unusual step of issuing an emergency alert late Friday afternoon to remind residents of new rules and encourage them to get vaccinated.

Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday a move to at-home learning for junior and senior high school students in COVID-19 hot spots as well as a ban on indoor fitness and sports.

He also said selective regional curfews will be considered if numbers go higher.
