The clang of bats against baseballs rang throughout Boyle as 20 teams gathered to compete at the annual Fiesta Days Slo-Pitch Tournament July 13-15.

The weekend event was organized by the Greater Athabasca Community Foundation (GACF) and featured teams and players from around the region competing. The baseball tournament was held at the Millview Recreation Complex and organized by Dmytro Sawka.

GACF president Lindsey Stanton said Fiesta Days has become ingrained in the community of Boyle.

"It's just a place that everyone comes and gathers. Everyone knows it's the second week mid-July, they have a good time and it brings the community together," Stanton said in an interview. "It has been here for so long I think it's just expected that it's here."

Nicole Kapach from Redwater has played in the tournament alongside her team for the past four years and said it is a good event for the village.

"It's a really good thing for Boyle to keep doing. I think it really bring in new people to the community and it really helps them show what Boyle has to offer," Kapach said in an interview.

Tyson Tymo who plays with a league team in Boyle participated in the Fiesta Days tournament and said the event is significant in the village.

"There's definitely an importance. Brings a lot of people here to see what's here. Supports all the businesses and everything," Tymo said.

The event acts as a fundraiser for GACF, Stranton said. Money raised goes toward landscaping around the organization's under construction spray park.

Stanton said the spray park is making good progress.

"We're hoping to be able to probably pour next week the concrete and should be a couple more weeks after that," Stanton said.

Fiesta Days also featured a dance at the Boyle Community Centre July 14 organized by GACF.

Braeden Zilinski of Grassland has competed in the tournament the past six years and said it is a fun weekend to be apart of.

"Just having fun and seeing everybody and playing ball," Zilinski said. "Just having a good time."
