SUNDRE – A STARS air ambulance was dispatched to the Myron Thompson Health Centre this afternoon to transport a patient following a crash on the west side of town.

On the afternoon of Friday, July 21 at 2:34 p.m., members of the Sundre RCMP responded alongside a crew from the Sundre Fire Department to the scene at the intersection of Highways 27 and 22.

Sgt. Randy Poon, the local detachment’s interim commander, confirmed following an initial interview that police had received a report of a collision between a loaded semi truck and a Dodge Caravan.

“The Dodge Caravan went through a stop sign and collided with the semi truck,” Poon told the Albertan, adding the former sustained substantial damage while the semi was only slightly damaged.

“The driver of the Dodge Caravan was airlifted by STARS for possible head injuries,” he said.

“Sundre RCMP would like to remind people to observe all the traffic signs on the highway and take extra precautions at intersections.”

Sundre Fire Department Chief Ross Clews said he was away from the office but that a crew tended to the scene.

Based on the radio chatter he’d heard, Clews said the collision had involved two vehicles, with one person transported to the Myron Thompson Health Centre with an air ambulance dispatched.

Efforts to clear the road were underway as of about 3:30 p.m. with tow trucks arriving at the scene, and the sergeant said the highway was clear by about 4:30 p.m.
