Fleeing stolen dirt bike rider caught in Trochu after pedestrian hit

TROCH, Alta — A Calgary man has been charged with numerous offences after allegedly hitting a pedestrian in Trochu on Canada Day while riding a stolen dirt bike.

On July 1 at approximately 2:26 p.m., Three Hills RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision in Trochu, approximately 65 kilometres east of Olds.

“Police determined the dirt bike had struck a pedestrian on Elevator Road and the rider fled the scene. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital,” police said in a news release issued today.

Police said they located the alleged dirt bike rider at a nearby residence and arrested him.

A 2015 KTM XCW dirt bike police allege was involved in the collision was seized from the garage of the residence during the execution of a search warrant.

The RCMP Auto Theft Unit later examined the dirt bike and determined it was stolen from Calgary, the news release states.

Three Hills RCMP have charged Christopher Ferguson, 31, of Calgary with several offences, some of which include:

• failure to stop after accident resulting in bodily harm;

• operation while prohibited;

• possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000;

• drive off-highway vehicle on highway without authorization; and

• drive uninsured off-highway vehicle.

Released on conditions, Ferguson’s next court appearance is in Drumheller provincial court on Aug. 19.
