One man is dead after a collision between an SUV and a train early this morning in Sturgeon County.

At 12:15 a.m., the Redwater RCMP responded to a call that an SUV travelling northbound on Range Road 223 collided with a train that was actively in the crossing.

The SUV failed to stop in time and the driver’s side of the SUV struck the train.

A 35-year-old male passenger of the SUV managed to get out of the vehicle and remove himself to safety. The vehicle caught fire following the collision and the driver was determined to be deceased.

RCMP are actively investigating and confirming the identification of the driver.

Charges are not anticipated and an update is not expected.
