Since 2007, the August holiday celebrates a beverage that brings people together

While International Beer Day kicks off August 1, Canadian Beer Day is celebrated on August 8. How will you celebrate?

Celebrated on the 1st Friday of August every year since 2007, International Beer Day brings people together in over 80 countries to celebrate beer, brewers and the wide range of beer styles available.

As the world raises a pint to celebrate, Beer Canada says they are proud to recognize the cultural and social significance of beer, as well its powerful contribution to the global and Canadian economy.

"Beer is more than just a beverage," Beer Canada writes. "It is a local industry that spans the globe and supports millions of jobs, promotes local agriculture, fuels hospitality sectors, and contributes billions in economic activity in communities large and small, rural and urban worldwide."

According to the World Brewing Alliance, the beer sector pours over $878 billion annually into the global economy and supports over 33 million jobs across agriculture, manufacturing, distribution, and hospitality.

In Canada, the beer sector supports over 149,000 Canadian jobs, contributes $13.6 billion to GDP, and acts as a social hub for many local communities.

According to CJ Hélie, President of Beer Canada, beer represents a larger brewing community with jobs and economic activity across the globe, even though it is so important on regional level as well.

“Beer is inherently local. It is most often brewed close to where it is sold and consumed," he says. "We’re proud that Canadian beer represents so much for so many both here at home and on the global stage as a positive symbol of the true north strong and free.”

While international Beer Day is held globally on August 1, Canadian Beer Day approaches on August 8 as well.

This year’s theme, “A Beverage Like No Other,” places a spotlight the craftsmanship, community, social wellbeing and economic value that defines Canadian beer. 88 per cent of all the beer Canadians chose to drink are made here.

Celebrate International Beer Day with a locally brewed alcoholic or non-alcoholic beer and show your pride in Canada’s place in the world.
