Hitting the open road is a summertime tradition for many individuals and families. No matter the destination, your vehicle becomes an essential — and potentially vulnerable — asset.
To help keep your vehicle and belongings safe during your summer adventures, the Alberta RCMP is reminding residents to take proactive measures against theft of and from vehicles.
Whether you're parked at a campsite, trailhead, or simply stepping away from your vehicle for a short while, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
Lock Your Vehicle
Even when you're nearby, always keep your vehicle locked. Whether you're relaxing at your campsite or strolling by the water, it only takes a moment for a thief to strike.
Don’t Leave It Running
Avoid leaving your vehicle running unattended—even for a quick errand. A momentary stop at the convenience store or bank can be all the opportunity a thief needs.
Secure Your Keys
Never leave keys, garage door openers, or personal documents in your vehicle. These items can be used not only to steal your car but also to access your home.
Hide or Lock Up Valuables
Ensure that valuable items are out of sight. A cluttered or exposed vehicle interior may entice opportunistic thieves. Secure off-highway vehicles (OHVs), bikes, and kayaks, and consider using window shades to obscure the view inside.
Close the Windows
Even on hot days, roll up your vehicle’s windows before leaving. For RVs, a locked screen door can provide airflow while adding security.
Use a Hitch Lock
Protect your trailer by securing the hitch with a hitch lock to deter potential towing theft.
Install Motion Sensor Lights
For those using RVs or trailers, motion sensor lights can deter thieves by drawing attention to suspicious activity.
Don't let theft ruin your summer. With a few simple precautions, you can help ensure your vehicle and belongings stay safe while you enjoy your travels.
