Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is coming to Okotoks.

The old Tim Hortons location in Okotoks’ Westmount Centre won’t be staying vacant for long.

Work has already begun on transforming the space into the first Alberta location for Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, a fast-casual restaurant chain based in the United States.

It’s anticipated the restaurant will open in September.

The Okotoks location will only be the second in Canada after the chain opened one in Winnipeg earlier this month.

Freddy’s has over 550 locations in the U.S.

The chain is known for its burgers, which see each patty pressed thinly to create crispy edges and finished with signature seasoning, and its frozen custard that comes in a variety of flavours.

It’s also got hotdogs and chicken on the menu along with fries, tots and onion rings.

The Okotoks location will offer dine-in, take-out and drive-thru service.

“We feel thrilled to be opening the first Freddy’s location in Western Canada and look forward to growing in the area over the next several years,” Ted Tomanik, one of the Okotoks franchise owners, said in a news release. “Freddy’s is committed to serving fresh, high-quality food in a clean and relaxing environment.”

The news release said Okotoks residents Brad and Tammy Gurr are also part of the ownership group.

“Being residents of Okotoks, it’s a special feeling to bring the Freddy’s experience to our community,” said Tammy Gurr. “Brad and I are excited to welcome friends, family and new guests to try this new restaurant concept. Our family-friendly atmosphere will give guests a place to connect over delicious food and create special memories.”

Tomanik said the operations are being run in Canada from both a corporate and franchisee standpoint. He said the restaurant is owned and operated by locals, employs locals and pays taxes locally.
