BARRHEAD COVID - May 10
Another resident of the County of Barrhead has reportedly died due to COVID-19, according to the province's geospatial map. Two other deaths had occurred in early December.

BARRHEAD-An additional COVID-related death has been recorded in the County of Barrhead, according to the geospatial map that lists COVID-19 cases in municipalities across the province.

As of 4 p.m. today, there are 86 active cases of COVID-19 within the County of Barrhead, a sizeable drop from the 107 cases reported on May 4. That works out to an active case rate of 853.3 cases per 100,000 people.

In early December, the geospatial map stated there had been two COVID-related deaths in the County of Barrhead. By May 7, that number jumped to three.

Alberta Health does not share information regarding any specific cases of COVID-19 due to patient confidentiality.

However, a spokesperson for Alberta Health was able to share that there were four COVID-related deaths reported on May 7, and one of them was a woman in her 80s within the North Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), which encompasses the County of Barrhead.

The date of death was May 5, and the case included comorbidities.

On the education front, Alberta Health currently lists outbreaks of 10-plus cases at Barrhead Elementary School, Barrhead Composite School and Covenant Canadian Reformed School in Neerlandia.

Neerlandia Public Christian School is also listed as having an outbreak of five to nine COVID-19 cases.

Looking to other nearby municipalities, Woodlands County is still listed as having three active cases, not including the Town of Whitecourt where there are 140 active cases. Lac Ste. Anne County also has 41 active cases.

The additional health restrictions announced on May 4 affect municipalities where there are a minimum of 30 active cases and an active case rate of 50 per 100,000 people.

As such, the new health restrictions affect the County of Barrhead, the Town of Whitecourt and Lac Ste. Anne County but not the rural areas of Woodlands County.

The heavier restrictions include a limit on outdoor gatherings of more than five people, a requirement for non-essential workplaces with an outbreak of three or more cases to temporarily shut down, a limit on capacity in retail stores to 10 per cent of fire code occupancy or five people, a limit of 15 people within services at places of worship and funeral services, a prohibition on outdoor fitness and other measures.

Meanwhile, in the rural areas of Woodlands County, outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people and funeral services of up to 20 people are allowed. Retail stores can allow up to 15 per cent of fire code capacity, personal and wellness services may stay open by appointment only, and services at places of worship may have attendance of up to 15 per cent of fire code occupancy. Outdoor team sports where two-metre distancing cannot be maintained are prohibited.

Provincewide, there is a prohibition on in-person dining, indoor fitness, wedding receptions and indoor social gatherings. Wedding ceremonies can have no more than 10 people present, including the officiant, the bride and groom, witnesses and any photographers/videographers.

As well, all schools are closed to in-person classes until after the Victoria Day long weekend.

There are currently 25,438 active cases of COVID-19 throughout the province. A total of 690 Albertans are currently hospitalized, including 158 in the ICU, and there have been 2,117 deaths.
