ATHABASCA - The funding rollback announced by the provincial government at the end of last month has resulted in a decrease to Aspen View Public School’s instructional funding by approximately 11 per cent.

Fortunately, Alberta Education gave schools boards the autonomy to identify savings in their budgets to try to mitigate the impact of layoffs, said Aspen View’s communication officer Ross Hunter.

“In the case of Aspen View, we have been able to realize some cost savings through decreased money spent on professional development, decreased travel costs for division staff, decreased trustee expenses (as meeting are being held online) and decreased substitute teacher costs,” Hunter explained.

As a result of these savings, the number of layoffs required within Aspen View will be less than originally anticipated although they anticipate approximately 25-30 per cent of the school-based support staff will be affected.

“The provincial government has indicated that the rollback of our funding allocation is for the months of May and June,” Hunter continued. “Therefore, no staff will be laid off prior to April 30, 2020, unless an earlier date is requested; some support staff have requested to be laid off due to personal circumstances.”

Aspen View has stated they will continue to provide benefit coverage for the duration of the layoff for all affected employees.
